Spiritual direction

Spirituality is a fundamental part of being human and is profoundly personal. Spiritual direction can develop a deeper awareness of the spiritual aspect of life.

Spiritual direction is open to anyone wishing to explore their faith journey. A spiritual director will be ready to listen, reflect and travel with you. There are no special requirements, just an interest in sharing your story with another person.

About spiritual direction

Spiritual direction is about meeting with a spiritual director, accompanier, or guide to share your thoughts and reflections about your faith and your life in the light of this. Some people experience spiritual direction while on retreat and others choose to meet with a spiritual director regularly throughout the year. If so, you will usually meet with your spiritual director every 6-8 weeks for about an hour.

A spiritual director has specific skills in listening, helping you to reflect more deeply on your faith journey and helping you to reflect on your relationship with God. All the spiritual directors working at St Marylebone HCC have received specific training in this field and are receiving supervision for their work.

In general, spiritual directors represent a wide variety of ages, denominations, and traditions. They may be ordained or lay. The choice of who you meet with is up to you. The most important thing is to find a spiritual director with whom you feel comfortable. We suggest that you consider contacting more than one person.

Spiritual directors usually ask for a donation for their time and will suggest a suitable fee. Concessions are usually made for those on low incomes or unwaged.

Finding a spiritual director

A list of spiritual directors who work in person at St Marylebone HCC is given below and you can contact them individually to arrange a meeting. Some remote sessions may also be available. Alternatively, you can contact St Marylebone HCC to discuss the way forward. The Retreat Association has a national network of names so this is a good place to start if you are looking for someone outside the London area. London Centre for Spiritual Direction and Mount Street Jesuit Centre can provide information for the London area.
