There has been an increasing use of the term “mental health” both in popular parlance and by governments and organisations. Implicit in this wording is that if we are not mentally healthy, we are mentally unhealthy and that this needs to be, and can be, cured. |
Emotional states such as depression and anxiety are framed as a sickness. By treating the symptoms are we merely pathologising human existence and by ignoring the underlying and sometimes unconscious causes of depression and anxiety, creating an environment whereby the core of our suffering is not examined. |
Are our psychological pains meaningless or are they the psyche calling for attention and what can we learn from our struggles? |
Alex Dalziel (UKCP) is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and supervisor working in private practice in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. After an initial WPF training Alex trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with the Association of Independent Psychotherapists. |
